Two-qubit Projective Measurements are Universal for Quantum Computation

چکیده
Nielsen showed in quant-ph/0108020 that universal quantum computation can be performed using projective measurements, quantum memory, and preparation of the |0〉 state. Furthermore, 4-qubit measurements are sufficient. Fenner and Zhang showed in quant-ph/0111077 that 3-qubit measurements are sufficient. We prove that 2-qubit measurements are sufficient, closing the gap between the upper and lower bound of the number of qubits to be measured jointly. We conclude with some open questions.

Universal quantum computation with two- and three-qubit projective measurements
We present a finite set of projective measurements that, together with quantum memory and preparation of the |0〉 state, suffice for universal quantum computation. This extends work of Nielsen [Nie01], who proposed a scheme in which an arbitrary unitary operation on n qubits can be simulated using only projective measurements on at most 2n qubits. All measurements in our set involve two qubits, ...
متن کاملUnifying Quantum Computation with Projective Measurements only and One-Way Quantum Computation
Quantum measurement is universal for quantum computation (Nielsen [4], Raussendorf [7,8]). Two models for performing measurement-based quantum computation exist: the one-way quantum computer was introduced by Briegel and Raussendorf [7], and quantum computation via projective measurements only by Nielsen [4]. The more recent development of this second model is based on state transfers [6] inste...
متن کاملState Transfer instead of Teleportation in Measurement-based Quantum Computation
Quantum measurement is universal for quantum computation (Nielsen [2], Leung [3,4]). The model of quantum computation introduced by Nielsen and further developed by Leung relies on a generalized form of teleportation. In order to simulate any n-qubit unitary transformation with this model, 4 auxiliary qubits are required. Moreover Leung exhibited a universal family of observables composed of 4 ...
متن کاملQuantum Error Correction of a Qubit Loss in an Addressable Atomic System
We present a scheme for correcting qubit loss error while quantum computing with neutral atoms in an addressable optical lattice. The qubit loss is first detected using a quantum non-demolition measurement and then transformed into a standard qubit error by inserting a new atom in the vacated lattice site. The logical qubit, encoded here into four physical qubits with the Grassl-BethPellizzari ...
متن کاملOne-way Quantum Computation A tutorial introduction
The circuit model of quantum computation [1, 2, 3] has been a powerful tool for the development of quantum computation, acting as both a framework for theoretical investigations and as a guide for experiment. In the circuit model (also called the network model), unitary operations are represented by a network of elementary quantum gates, for example the CNOT gate and single-qubit operations. Ma...
